Two-Year Postdoctoral Fellowship in Cognitive Zoology

Link to the application systemIn Swedish The fellowship is placed at the cognitive zoology group at the sub-department of cognitive science (Department of philosophy). The cognitive zoology group directs two research facilities with ravens and great apes respectively. This allows for comparisons between species with high cognitive complexity and substantial phylogenetic distance. The group conducts successful research on different aspects of memory and planning in non-human animals. The post-doc fellow will focus on one of three areas: (1) Comparisons of cognitive biases in memory and planning among ravens, great apes and humans. (2) Comparisons between ravens and great apes (and possibly humans) in the “memory-for-action”-paradigm, i. e. memory and planning relating to one’s own actions in comparison to events without such a component. (3) Whether ravens and great apes can represent future events as probabilistic and plan for uncertainty. The position is full-time and primarily involves research. The post-doc fellow is expected to participate in, and contribute to, seminars and other research related activities at the department in general, and at the cognitive zoology group in particular. The position might also include the organizing of workshops. Within the fellowship there might be possibilities for teaching and supervising. Qualifications: the candidate must have been awarded a PhD or an equivalent international degree not more than three years before the application deadline. Candidates who completed a PhD over three years ago will only be considered if they can provide certificates of parental leave (or birth certificates of their children), sickness leave, or other reasons for leave, in the application. The candidate should have a PhD in cognitive science, psychology, zoology, or the equivalent, with a focus on animal cognition. Work on corvids and great apes will be considered as advantageous for the position. As will work on memory or planning in animals or humans. The grounds for assessment are research and teaching skills. The main criterion is research skills. The assessment will place emphasis on the applicant’s project description. The research project must be possible to complete within the two-year period. A time plan, and the planned format for reporting the results of the project, must therefore be included in the project description.
